Is propaganda the driving force behind the current global crisis?

Why are so many professionals (lawyers, scientists, medical professionals, journalists etc.) currently being silenced and/or threatened in various ways if they choose to share their expert knowledge, observations, and research findings with the world?

A group of BC medical professionals recently sent an open letter to government officials demanding answers but for fear of repercussions remained anonymous.
